Typology of Non- Conventional Water Resources (NCWR) What kind of NCWR do you deal with ?:
Greywater (GW), Other
Other Typology:
Car wash wastewater
What are the challenges raised by your Best Practice?
Overexploited groundwater, Move towards zero discharge at local level, Vulnerability to climate Change
How could you describe your Best Practice?
Wastewater generated from public transportation vehicles washing operations is first collected in a collection tank. The collected wastewater is directed to a packaged wastewater treatment (PRP) system that includes a sedimentation tank, a pH balancing unit, and activated carbon filters. During the treatment process, suspended solids are removed by sedimentation, the pH value is adjusted to the appropriate range, and organic pollutants are removed by activated carbon filtration. The reclaimed water obtained after the treatment process is reused in public transportation vehicles washing operations, aiming to ensure the circular use of water and reduce water consumption.

How your Best Practice is economically feasible ?
The financial feasibility of the system is based on the principle of treating and reusing wastewater generated from public transportation vehicles washing operations. By reusing the recovered water in washing operations, municipal water consumption is significantly reduced. This not only saves the money on water supply costs but also reduces wastewater discharge costs. Thanks to the high water recovery rate, the system recoups its investment and operating costs within a certain period, creating an economically sustainable structure.
Is your Best Practice economically viable ?
8
Is your Best Practice environmentally sustainable ?
10
If there was a sustainability assessment carried out, what are the result of this assessment ?
The system was established in 2017. Since its installation, it has been used daily for washing buses. Periodic maintenance is carried out by municipal staff. It is a sustainable and trouble-free system.

To which Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) your Best Practice contributes?
SDG6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG12: Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG13: Climate Action
The simple design of the system has ensured its sustainability. Regular maintenance and filter replacement are required, the operational status of the system must be monitored, chemicals should be readily available, and daily analysis data must be tracked.
Have you any recommendation to add?
Installation of similar systems integrated with rainwater and greywater is ongoing in other municipal bus garages. It is possible to further improve the system by supporting it with new technologies.
